What's Really Included on a Royal Caribbean Cruise? Let's Talk About It

So you're thinking about booking a Royal Caribbean cruise for your family? That's exciting! But I know what you're probably wondering right now: "Okay, Heather, what exactly am I paying for? What's included, and what's going to cost me extra once I'm on the ship?"

This is hands-down the most common question I get from families planning their first cruise, and I totally get it. Nobody wants to board a ship thinking everything's covered, only to discover they're getting nickel-and-dimed for every little thing. Let me walk you through exactly what Royal Caribbean includes in your cruise fare and what you'll want to budget for separately.

After helping families plan their cruise vacations, I've learned that understanding what's included ahead of time makes for a much more relaxing, enjoyable experience. No surprises, no stress - just smooth sailing (literally!).

The Good News: Royal Caribbean Includes a LOT

Here's what I love about Royal Caribbean - they really do include an incredible amount in your base cruise fare. I'm talking way more than most families realize! Your cruise price covers your stateroom, of course, but it also includes so much more.

Let's start with the food, because that's usually everyone's first concern. You and your family can eat pretty much whenever you want, wherever you want, without paying a dime extra. The main dining room serves beautiful multi-course dinners every single night - I'm talking appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts that would cost you a fortune at a restaurant on land. The menus rotate daily, so you're never eating the same thing twice. And if someone in your family has dietary restrictions? The dining staff will work with you to make sure everyone's taken care of.

Then there's the Windjammer, which is the main buffet. This place is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it's perfect for families with picky eaters or anyone who just wants options. We're talking different stations with Asian food, Mediterranean dishes, American classics, a salad bar, dessert station - you name it. My favorite part? You can go back as many times as you want. Kids love the freedom of choosing exactly what they want.

But wait, there's more food! Royal Caribbean has complimentary pizza that's available pretty much all day and night. Trust me, your teenagers will find this spot and you'll barely see them. There's also a café that serves free coffee, tea, and pastries around the clock. On the newer ships, you'll find El Loco Fresh with complimentary Mexican food - tacos, burritos, nachos - and it's actually really good. Some ships even have a spot called the Boardwalk Dog House where you can grab hot dogs and sausages.

Now let's talk about entertainment, because this is where cruising really shines. Every single night, there are Broadway-caliber shows in the main theater. I'm talking professional productions with talented singers, dancers, and performers. The ice skating shows (yes, there's an ice rink on some ships!) are absolutely spectacular. If you're on one of the Oasis-class ships, you'll also get to see incredible aqua shows with high divers and synchronized swimmers.

During the day, there's live music all over the ship, comedy shows, trivia contests, dance classes, karaoke, talent shows, and deck parties. Movies play on a huge screen by the pool under the stars. And here's the thing - you don't pay extra for any of this. It's all just there for you to enjoy.

For the kids, Adventure Ocean is completely included. This is Royal Caribbean's kids club program, and it's divided by age groups so everyone from three-year-olds to seventeen-year-olds has age-appropriate activities. The counselors plan themed parties, games, crafts, and entertainment throughout the day. It's supervised, it's safe, and honestly, your kids might not want to leave. I've had parents tell me their children ask to go back to the kids club instead of doing other activities!

All the pools, hot tubs, and water slides are included too. The FlowRider surf simulator? Free. The rock climbing wall? Free. Mini golf, basketball courts, the jogging track, the fitness center with all its classes - all included. On the Quantum-class ships, you can even try the iFLY skydiving simulator and ride bumper cars without paying extra. I mean, where else can you do that?

Your stateroom comes with daily housekeeping - usually twice a day, actually. Fresh towels, your bed made, everything tidied up. There's room service available twenty-four hours (though some items might have a small delivery fee). You get pool towels provided, so you don't need to pack or lug your own around. And all those public spaces - the lounges, the promenade, the deck areas - are yours to enjoy whenever you want.

Okay, So What Does Cost Extra?

Now let's talk about the extras, because yes, there are some things that aren't included. But here's the deal - if you know about them ahead of time, you can budget accordingly and there won't be any sticker shock.

Specialty restaurants are probably the biggest extra expense for most families. Royal Caribbean has these amazing specialty dining venues - steakhouses, Italian restaurants, Japanese hibachi and sushi bars, and other unique concepts - that charge a cover fee, usually somewhere between twenty-five and seventy-five dollars per person. Is it worth it? I think so for a special occasion. The food is outstanding, the atmosphere is more intimate, and it feels like a splurge. Many families I work with will book one specialty dinner during their cruise to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. The rest of the time, they eat at the complimentary venues and are perfectly happy.

Here's a money-saving tip though: if you know you want to try multiple specialty restaurants, Royal Caribbean offers dining packages that give you several specialty meals for a discounted price. It's worth looking into if fine dining is important to you.

Drinks are another area where costs add up. Your cruise fare includes water, coffee, tea, and iced tea at the buffet and main dining room. Lemonade and juice at breakfast are free too. But alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees from Starbucks, smoothies, bottled water, and soda all cost extra. For families who drink a lot of soda or specialty drinks, Royal Caribbean offers beverage packages that can actually save you money. I usually run the numbers with families to see if a package makes sense based on their drinking habits. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't - it really depends on your family.

Shore excursions are separate from your cruise fare, and this is where you'll want to think about what kind of experience you want at each port. You can book guided tours, adventure activities like zip-lining or snorkeling, beach breaks, or cultural experiences. Royal Caribbean offers excursions you can book through them, or you can book independently. There are pros and cons to each approach, and I'm always happy to help families figure out which excursions are worth it and which ports are better for just exploring on your own.

The spa and salon aren't included either. Massages, facials, haircuts, manicures - these all cost extra. But honestly? Sometimes treating yourself to a massage while sailing through the Caribbean is exactly what vacation should be about.

Photos are everywhere on the ship. Professional photographers will snap your picture at dinner, by the pool, in front of cool backdrops - and then those photos are available for purchase. They offer packages, or you can buy individual prints. Fair warning: they're not cheap. But they're also really good quality, and sometimes you want those professional family photos without having to worry about selfie sticks.

You'll also pay extra for WiFi if you need to stay connected. The internet packages aren't the cheapest, but if you need to check work email or let the grandparents know you're alive, it's there. Pro tip: the minute packages add up fast, so if you're going to use internet, buy a package.

And then there are gratuities. This is automatic and usually runs about sixteen to eighteen dollars per person, per day. These tips go to your room steward, your dining room servers, and all the behind-the-scenes crew members who work incredibly hard to make your vacation amazing. You can prepay these when you book your cruise, or they'll be charged to your account at the end. I always recommend prepaying just to spread out the cost and not think about it during your vacation.

How to Think About Your Budget

Here's how I usually explain it to families: your cruise fare covers your "home base" - your room, your food, your entertainment, and most activities. Everything beyond that is up to you. Want to splurge on a fancy dinner? Go for it. Want to book an exciting excursion at every port? You can do that. Want to keep it simple and just enjoy what's included on the ship? That works too!

For a family of four on a week-long cruise, I typically suggest budgeting somewhere between one thousand and twenty-five hundred dollars beyond your cruise fare for a comfortable experience. That covers gratuities, some shore excursions, maybe a specialty dinner or two, drinks, and souvenirs. You can definitely spend less if you're budget-conscious, or more if you want to go all out. The beauty of cruising is that you have options.

One thing I love about Royal Caribbean is that you really can have an incredible vacation without spending a ton beyond your cruise fare. There's so much included entertainment and so many complimentary dining options that you're never going to be bored or hungry. The extras are truly extras - nice-to-haves, not necessities.

A Few Money-Saving Secrets

Want to know how to make your cruise budget go further? Here are some of my favorite tips that I share with families.

Bring a refillable water bottle. Seriously, this saves so much money. You can fill it up at the beverage stations throughout the ship and stay hydrated without buying bottled water.

Pack some snacks for the kids. Granola bars, crackers, whatever travels well. The free food on the ship is plentiful, but sometimes kids just want their familiar snacks, especially if they're picky eaters.

Take advantage of all those free activities. There is so much to do that's already included! Rock climbing, ice skating shows, comedy acts, deck parties, movies - you could literally never get bored just enjoying what's complimentary.

Book shore excursions in advance. Sometimes you can get better deals booking ahead rather than waiting until you're on the ship.

Consider prepaying your gratuities. It takes that cost off your mind during the cruise, and spreading it out with your initial payment feels easier than seeing it all at once at the end.

Download the Royal Caribbean app before you sail. You can make dining reservations, book activities, check the daily schedule, and even chat with family members on the ship when you're connected to the ship's WiFi. It's super helpful and keeps you organized.

What Makes Royal Caribbean Special

After all these years of booking cruises for families, you know what I think makes Royal Caribbean stand out? It's that they've figured out how to create an experience where everyone in the family - from toddlers to grandparents - can have an amazing time. The sheer variety of what's included means there's always something for everyone to enjoy.

Your seven-year-old can be at the kids club making new friends while your teenager is challenging themselves on the FlowRider. You and your spouse can catch a Broadway show while the grandparents relax by the pool. Then you all meet up for dinner and share stories about your day. That's the magic of cruising.

And the best part? You unpack once. Your "hotel" moves with you to different islands and ports, but you don't have to deal with packing and unpacking, checking in and out of different hotels, or arranging transportation between destinations. It's all taken care of.
